I had a first cousin called Arthur McBride

For recreation we went on a tramp
\nwhere we met Sergeant Harper and Corporal Crump
\nAnd a little wee drummer intending to camp
\nfor the day being pleasant and charming
\n“Good morning, good morning” the sergeant did cry
\n“And the same to you gentlemen” we did reply
\nIntending no harm, we made to pass by
\nFor it being on Christmas mornin’<\/p>\n

Says he, “My fine fellows, if you will enlist
\nit’s ten guineas I quickly will shove in your fist
\nAnd a crown in the bargain to kick off the dust
\nand to drink the king’s health in the morning
\nFor a soldier he leads a very fine life
\nand he always is blessed with a pretty young wife
\nAnd he pays all his debts without worry or strife
\nand always is pleasant and charming<\/p>\n

And a soldier, he always is decent and clean
\nin the finest of clothes he is constantly seen
\nWhile other poor fellows are dirty and mean
\nand sup on thin gruel in the morning”<\/p>\n

But says Arthur, I wouldn’t be proud of your clothes
\nfor you’ve only the lend of them, as I suppose
\nAnd you dare not remove them at night
\nfor you know if you do, you’ll be flogged in the morning<\/p>\n

And although that we are single and free
\nwe take great delight in our own company
\nAnd we have no desire strange faces to see
\nalthough your offers are charming
\nAnd we have no desire to take your advance
\nof hazards and dangers we’ll barter our chance
\nFor you have no scruples and will send us to France
\nwhere we’ll surely be shot without warning<\/p>\n

Oh now, says the sergeant, if I hear one more word
\nI instantly then will draw out my sword
\nAnd run through your bodies as strength can afford
\nSo now you gay devils take warning!
\nBut Arthur and me we took in the odds
\nand we gave them no chance for to lunge out their swords
\nOur trusty shillaleahs come over their heads
\nand bade them take that as fair warning<\/p>\n

As for the wee drummer, we rifled his pouch
\nWe made a football of his rowdy-dow-dow
\nThrew it in the tide for to rock and to roll
\nand bade it a tedious returning
\nAnd as for the rapiers that hung at their sides
\nwe flung them as far as would could in the tide
