Now Delaney had a donkey that everyone admired,
\nTempo’rily lazy and permanently tired
\nA leg at ev’ry corner balancing his head,
\nand a tail to let you know which end he wanted to be fed
\nRiley slyly said “”We’ve underrated it,
\nwhy not train it?” Then he took a rag
\nThey rubbed it, scrubbed it, they oiled and embrocated it,
\ngot it to the post and when the starter dropped his flag<\/p>\n

There was Riley pushing it, shoving it, shushing it
\nHogan, Logan and ev’ryone in town
\nlined up attacking it and shoving it and smacking it
\nThey might as well have tried to push the Town Hall down
\nThe donkey was eyeing them, openly defying them
\nWinking, blinking and twisting out of place
\nRiley reversing it, ev’rybody cursing it
\nThe day Delaney’s donkey ran the halfmile race<\/p>\n

The muscles of the mighty never known to flinch,
\nthey couldn’t budge the donkey a quarter of an inch
\nDelaney lay exhausted, hanging round its throat
\nwith a grip just like a Scotchman on a five pound note
\nStarter, Carter, he lined up with the rest of ’em.
\nWhen it saw them, it was willing then
\nIt raced up, braced up, ready for the best of ’em.
\nThey started off to cheer it but it changed its mind again<\/p>\n

There was Riley pushing it, shoving it and shushing it
\nHogan, Logan and Mary Ann Macgraw,
\nshe started poking it, grabbing it and choking it
\nIt kicked her in the bustle and it laughed “”Hee – Haw!””
\nThe whigs, the conservatives, radical superlatives
\nLibr’rals and tories, they hurried to the place
\nStood there in unity, helping the community
\nThe day Delaney’s donkey ran the halfmile race<\/p>\n

The crowd began to cheer it. Then Rafferty, the judge
\nhe came to assist them, but still it wouldn’t budge
\nThe jockey who was riding, little John MacGee,
\nwas so thoroughly disgusted that he went to have his tea
\nHagan, Fagan was students of psychology,
\nswore they’d shift it with some dynamite
\nThey bought it, brought it, then without apology
\nthe donkey gave a sneeze and blew the darn stuff out of sight<\/p>\n

There was Riley pushing it, shoving it and shushing it
\nHogan, Logan and all the bally crew,
\nP’lice, and auxil’ary, the Garrison Artillery
\nThe Second Enniskillen’s and the Life Guards too
\nThey seized it and harried it, they picked it up and carried it
\nCheered it, steered it to the winning place
\nThen the Bookies drew aside, they all commited suicide
