One fine sunny evening last summer
\nI was straying along by the sea
\nWhen a pair of quare playboys a-roving
\nbefore me I happened to see
\nNow to learn what these boy-os were up to
\nA trifle I hastened me walk
\nFor I thought I could learn their profession
\nWhen I got within range of their talk<\/p>\n

Now, one of these boys was the devil
\nAnd the other was Bailiff McGlynn
\nAnd the one was as black as the other
\nAnd both were as ugly as sin
\nSays the old boy, says he, “I’m the devil
\nAnd you are a bailiff, I see”
\n“Ah! ’tis the devil himself,” cries the bailiff
\n“Now that beats the devil,” says he<\/p>\n

A gossoon ran out from a cottage
\nand took him up over the fields
\n“May the devil take you,” said his mother
\nAs she rattled a stone at his heels
\n“Ah now, why don’t you take the young rascal
\nyour highness?” the bailiff he cried
\n“It was not from her heart that she said it”
\nthe devil he smiling replied<\/p>\n

Close by a small patch of potatoes
\nA banbh was striving to dig
\nWhen the owner come out and she cried
\n“May the devil take you for a pig!”
\nSaid the bailiff, “Now that’s a fine offer
\nWhy not take the banbh?” says he
\n“It was but with her lips that she said it
\nAnd that’s not sufficient for me”<\/p>\n

As they jogged on, the gossoon espyed them
\nand into his mother he sped
\nCrying, “Mother!” says he, “There’s a bailiff!”
\nShe clasped her two hands and she said
\n“May the devil take that ugly bailiff!”
\nSaid the old boy, “Bedad! That’ll do
\nIt was straight from her heart that she said it
