{"id":1477,"date":"2008-03-17T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2008-03-17T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beerbellyband.com\/fifth-day-of-october-the"},"modified":"2008-03-17T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2008-03-17T11:00:00","slug":"fifth-day-of-october-the","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beerbellyband.com\/en\/fifth-day-of-october-the\/","title":{"rendered":"FIFTH DAY OF OCTOBER, THE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Irish traditional song lyrics \u2014 collected by Beer Belly Band.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s many a date in history of which the poet sings,<br \/>\nOf battles won and battles lost, of emperors and kings.<br \/>\nBut the fifth day of October stays in my mem&#8217;ry yet.<br \/>\nFor the things I saw in Derry town I never will forget.<\/p>\n<p>Now poverty and hardship have long been Ireland&#8217;s lot,<br \/>\nAnd some would say that Paddy&#8217;s land is a place that&#8217;s best forgot,<br \/>\nBut I&#8217;m a true-born Derry man and never run away,<br \/>\nSo with the few I joined the queue in the march that fateful day.<\/p>\n<p>The Police came on like bully boys and told us we must cease,<br \/>\nFor Derry town was not our own for marching where we please,<br \/>\nAnd wiser men and better had given this advice,<br \/>\nAnd if we dared to disagree we would pay an awful price.<\/p>\n<p>And then the gang advanced on us, the tyrants&#8217; hireling crew,<br \/>\nAnd smiling in their viciousness their sticks and batons drew,<br \/>\nOn the fifth day of October I saw sights that warmed my brain,<br \/>\nThe screams and shouts or injured men, and the awful cries of pain.<\/p>\n<p>Oh! Fools have ruled o&#8217;er men before, but always comes a time<br \/>\nThough beaten low by savage foe from off their knees they climb,<br \/>\nAnd woe be to the tyrants when the people&#8217;s wrath is shown,<br \/>\nWhen corruption&#8217;s laws and despot&#8217;s cause are forever overthrown.<\/p>\n<p>Come all you true-born working men and list awhile to me,<br \/>\nThe fifth day of October will always precious be;<br \/>\nAnd freedom&#8217;s torch that Derry lit will kindle far and wide<br \/>\nWhen the struggle&#8217;s done and we&#8217;ve overcome, we can hold our head with pride.<\/p>\n<p>from: J.
