You’ve heard of the Gresford Disaster,
\nOf the terrible price that was paid;
\nTwo hundred and forty two colliers were lost,
\nAnd three of the rescue brigade.<\/p>\n

It occurred in the month of September
\nAt three in the morning the pit
\nWas racked by a violent explosion
\nIn the Dennis where gas lay so thick.<\/p>\n

Now the gas in the Dennis deep section
\nWas heaped there like snow in a drift,
\nAnd many a man had to leave the coal-face
\nBefore he had worked out his shift.<\/p>\n

Now a fortnight before the explosion,
\nTo the shotfirer Tomlinson cried,
\n“If you fire that shot we’ll be all blown to hell!”
\nAnd no one can say that he lied.<\/p>\n

Now the fireman’s reports they are missing
\nThe records of forty-two days;
\nThe collier manager had them destroyed
\nTo cover his criminal ways.<\/p>\n

Down there in the dark they are lying.
\nThey died for nine shillings a day;
\nThey have worked out their shift and now they must lie
\nIn the darkness until Judgment day.<\/p>\n

Now the Lord Mayor of London’s collecting
\nTo help out the children and wives;
\nThe owners have sent some white lilies
\nTo pay for the poor colliers’ lives.<\/p>\n

Farewell all our dear wives and children
\nFarewell all our comrades as well,
