That wouldn&#8217;t be right.<br \/>\nOne shouldn&#8217;t drink spirits at this time of night.<br \/>\nHave some Madiera, m&#8217;dear&#8230;..<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s really an excellent year.<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t care for Sherry, and one cannot drink Stout,<br \/>\nand Port is a wine I can well do without!<br \/>\nYou see, it&#8217;s strictly a case of &#8216;Chacun a son GOUT&#8230;.&#8217;<br \/>\nHave some Madiera, m&#8217;dear?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Unaware of the wiles of the snake in the grass<br \/>\nAnd the fate of a maiden who topes.<br \/>\nShe lowered her standards by raising her glass,<br \/>\nHer mind, her courage, and his hopes.<br \/>\nShe sipped it. She drank it. She drained it. she did!<br \/>\nHe quietly re-filled it again,<br \/>\nand he said, as he secretly carved one more notch<br \/>\non the butt of his gold-handled cane&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Have some Madiera, m&#8217;dear?<br \/>\nI have a small cask of it here&#8230;<br \/>\nand once it&#8217;s been opened, it won&#8217;t keep,<br \/>\nFinish it up; it will help you to&#8230;sleep.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Have some Madiera, m&#8217;dear?<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s ever so much nicer than Beer!<br \/>\nNow if it were Gin you&#8217;d do wrong to say &#8216;yes&#8217;<br \/>\nthe Evil gin does is hard to assess&#8230;<br \/>\nand, besides, it&#8217;s inclined to affect my Prowess&#8230;.<br \/>\nHave some Madiera, m&#8217;dear?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then there flashed thru her mind what her mother had said<br \/>\nwith her ante-pen-ultimate breath:<br \/>\n&#8220;Oh, my child, should you gaze on the wine that is red:<br \/>\nBE PREPARED FOR A FATE WORSE THAN DEATH!&#8221;<br \/>\nShe let go the glass with a shy little cry.  (eek!)<br \/>\nCrash! Tinkle! It fell to the floor.<br \/>\nWhen he said: &#8220;What in Heaven?&#8221; She made no reply.<br \/>\nUp her mind and in a dash for the door!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Have some Madiera, m&#8217;dear?&#8221;<br \/>\nRang out down the hall, loud and clear<br \/>\nin a tremulous voice that was filled with Despair<br \/>\nas she paused to take breath in the cool, midnight air&#8230;<br \/>\n&#8220;Have some Madiera, m&#8217;dear?&#8230;&#8230;&#8221;<br \/>\nThe words seemed to ring in her ear.<br \/>\nUntil the next morning she woke up, in bed<br \/>\nwith a smile on her lips, and an ache in her head,<br \/>\nand a BEARD at her earlobe which * tickled *, and said:<br \/>\n&#8220;Have some Madiera, m&#8217;dear?&#8221;<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>She was young.
